Promoting Deeper Learning Through DOK
Authors:
Deborah La Torre Matrundola
This conference poster explores the promotion of deeper learning in K-12 education through the use of more cognitively complex assessments. As part of a multi-year evaluation funded by the William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, CRESST has been examining the efforts being made by Smarter Balanced and PARCC concerning the inclusion of greater levels of complexity in their assessment items and tasks. Building on this work, we discuss the classification systems for cognitive complexity being used, present examples of publicly released items at different levels of complexity, and discuss our findings to date.
